Help Center: What are Product Attributes and how do I use them?
*Click on any image below to see a larger version of it.*
For your products on OS Commerce, you can add what are called 'Product Attributes.' This means
that each product can have several options, such as choice of color, size, or anything else
which would be appropriate to the product. These can also have an effect on the product’s price
if you wish.
As for regular online store maintenance, begin by selecting 'Catalog' in the
administration menu.
|
|
|
On the following screen, select 'Products Attributes.'
|
To add a Product Option:
The next screen is where you can modify the product attributes. On the left, you will see
'Product Options.' This is the type of option you want to define. Some of these are already set
up, such as Size, Color, Shirt Type, and Dog Sweater Sizes. If you want to add another type of
option, for example, you could add a product called Gift Certificate, and add a Product Option
called 'Amount', to avoid creating a new product for each amount of Gift Certificate. Enter
the name of the new Product Option in the space next to the 'en:' and click on 'insert.'
'en' stands for English, 'de' for German, and 'es' for Spanish. You may fill out these fields as well
if you want to have a multilingual store.
You can also edit or delete existing Product Options, but before deleting, you must make
sure that they are not being used by any products currently in the catalog.
|

|
|
To add an Option Value:
On the right side of the screen are the 'Option Values.' This is where the value for each
attribute is specified – for example, for the Product Option 'size,' you would have the
Option Values 'small,' 'medium,' and 'large.' To add a new Option Value, select the Option
Name from the drop down box, and then enter the value in the box next to the 'en:' and
click on 'insert.'
As with the Product Options, you can edit or delete the Option Values, but before deleting,
you must make sure that they are not being used by any products currently in the catalog.
|
|
At the bottom of the page, you can assign the option values to the products in the catalog.
In the drop down list, select the product to which you want to add the values. In the second
drop down box, select the option type you want to use, and in the third, select the value.
|
|
|
The 'Value Price' column can be used to increase the price for a certain option (if red socks
cost more than blue ones, for example) or to give a discount (if small sweaters
cost less than large sweaters, for example). Enter the dollar amount to be added or
subtracted from the regular price, and in the box where there is a plus sign, leave the
plus sign for a price increase, and change it to a minus sign for a price discount. As in
the previous sections, you can also edit or delete attributes from a current product.
|
|
These attributes appear in drop down boxes on the page for the product. If there is a price
difference, it is also displayed next to the option, and will be taken into account when the
product is added to the shopping cart.
